
PRE SHELTERS
Many persons living on the street are not willing or yet ready, especially chronic homeless, to go to shelter and go through the process of intensive reintegration . Pre shelter can consist of food for coupons ( earned by collecting litter ) such as at Somerset West, Capetown, with social work assistance to get IDs, Disabilty Grants and other gradually build up relationships and self esteem so that admission to a shelter is viable as is the process of applying for work again.
THE FIRST SAFE SPACE IN BELLVILLE STARTED 20017 - A PRIVATE INITIATIVE BY MES
PRIVATE 200 bed SAFE SPACE IN BELLVILLE BY MES Started in bellville 2017 probably inspired the COC who has yet to follow suit. The MES Safe Space offers very basic shelter space to the homeless community. This space creates a safe haven at night to sleep, sheltered from weather and criminal elements, and which provides access to shower and ablution facilities. Most importantly, this is the contact point for MES outreach and social workers to engage with the homeless person, assess his or her needs and create an individual development plan. Our services include: • Managed, covered and safe sleeping area • Locker, ablution and washing facilities • Intake services • Social relief – providing blankets and toiletries • During the day MES Community kitchens provide meals @ R5 cash or with a meal voucher • Referrals to resources and professional services • Life skills workshops aimed at harm reduction and the development of craft activities • Crises intervention services SEE MORE
