I did not have my camera today. Perhaps I am glad in a sense. Cameras dont capture so many things.
I met 3 poeple in muizenburg and we travelled though to kalk bay.
There about about 7 men joined us unexpectedly in Kalk Bay . Especially disheveled as if they had survived some very very long ardous journey.
One had the sense of people needing so much much. so much care, so much acceptance , so much food and clothes and I could go on. I suspect they came from the mountain passing through
And as people do when they are neglected, there was initally distrust and and unease at the table from some.
There was also the sense of being around a table..so rare..and wanting to savour yet perhaps not quite sure if there was a catch.
Unexpectedly when soup and rolls arrived, one of the most dishevelled men said..we should say grace. I am so often surpised at the beauty people have within, despite appearances.
His prayer went somethning like this
please give us food please lord please,,
and lord please give us Work "
How do we find work for poeple with dishevelled clothes..without Ids,,(lack of Ids came up again in the conversation..) ?
We still managed a few smiles but this was one of more sombre days..
I too pray for more work, more food ,more clothes ( espcially shoes and socks for men ) on behalf of the bautuful souls on the street but especially i pray for more kindness..that will be the only source of the rest..
We gave each of the 10 folk a second haven food and shower ticket for the week ( thanking our donors again for the R200 that made this possible) . and Isaac the manager kindly arranged days when they could shower too.
I am left with a sadness more about the lack in this world of connection we have with so called strangers. Noone felt like a stranger to me today ..the way we judge by appearances..

Thank you Froula Van Zyl for your AMAZING generosity in donating more !!! we are able for a month or 2 to extend our haven food tickets a little more.. . Isaac the supervisor at Haven was glad to see folk. He was worked i dont know how long but a very long time at kalk bay and has a real love for people on the street and recognises somany I am meeting every week for the first time .. .so anyway we arranged due the amazing generosity of Froula Van s donation topping up our account last week well be able to take lunches away and also hand them out on the street in containers for amonth or 2 as i can only fit in 5 in my car.. suppose to some this might sound strange but once again in the face of extreme vulnerabilty I had the privilage of seeing how the human spirit is so strong..and levels of gratitude and humility not easy to find in other walks of life Amongst other folk.I picked up and older woman Margaret aged 59 whose birthday is in novemeber this year ...rasta guy who looks after her..he has lived all over cape town and talked about how much less dangerous than other parts of capetonw the peninsual was...thats was in muizenburg we met today ..they were witting in the park. I knew immediately how much it meant to them ..bothe telling me how hungry they had been todasy and both jumped and came along as if we were old frineds..this is the amazing thign on the street,,, I had to really look around and the traffic stopped me pickup upsome other folk.we found three more peep nearer kalk bay this time .
At the moment one of the residents in Haven kalk bay is a superlative cook...kebabs wonderful rice and vergatable were served,,and everyone started smiling....I continue to be humbled by how the temporary residents in the shelter too i meet eacg week ,, all to aware of the precariousness of their own future too,,,treat guests off the streets, its a levle of kindness and humity to be honest ive only found on the street ..and well in children ,,,some thing deep that to contemplate isnt it? what a beautiul day and thanks to ALL donors (clothes too ) M for keeping us going a little more !! If anyone would like to meet us there next friday let me know youre more than welcome and your day will only be enhanced.. you could bring a few cool drinks etc its so hot
mike danny rushaan and fernando at the kalk bay Haven 22 august : regular wednesday PSC street Project lunches
On 22-8-18 recently Danny, Mike and Rushaan attended a special meal kindly prepared by Kalk bay haven with food tickets from our sponsors. Its was chicken and chips and really generous helpings were given and some was taken away too !.
In The video we took over lunch, AQ discussion about Mikes cell phone needing battery for R30 led to a chat about just how much MORE vulnerable to theft and mugging homeless folk are than homed We hope more will hear this so please consider sharing this page w video as it dispells so many stereotypes .
We also gave out about around 15 tickets to people on the way that could not get there as my car was not big enough to transport, as well as chicken and chips were taken kindly to some of the kalk bay residents selling on side of the road.
We decided to give an extra ticket to those attending the lunch as some food security which well continue doing in future funds permitting.
As usual one sensed deep compassion from the shelter residents themselves who know the scenario of being on street all too well and a deeply appreciative kind atmosphere was enjoyed.
We really hope more people from the public start to attend. Fears and anxieties about people living on street usually turn out to become rather admiration when one takes the time to know more of the guests lives.
Please consider donating even R50 to our fund to keep these instructive and so important regualr lunches and food ticket handouts going CLICK HERE
Some of the local Kalk bay folk enjoyed beautifully made soup by Eugene the cook. The meal was eaten in a peaceful silence . A comment was made how rare it was to sit around around a table in a spirit of acceptance. As Usual the shelter peep staying for now in the Haven were extremely kind and served with real repsect for those sitting there. People asked if those in wider community would come and meet them - they are really keen ..Please do come folks . Thank you to Isaac for organsing this day.
